Pilot Personal Accident insurance covers injury (fatal or otherwise) to a pilot and is not subject to fault or liability. It would be preferable for all pilots to have 24-hour coverage, covering them for accidental injury whilst at work or away from work (including whilst on holiday). A professionally employed pilot may be covered by Workers Compensation whilst at work but not away from work whereas a "private" pilot has no such cover at all. Such Personal Accident insurance will provide financial support and assistance to a pilot and his family in the event of an accident.
The Air Pilots Award 2010 (MA000046), which came into force on 01 January 2010 and is enforceable under the Fair Work Act 2009, stipulates that an employer will provide each full-time pilot with accident insurance of not less than $251,305 ($69,807 for aerial application operations).
